City of Sydney to ban gas appliances in new homes from 2026
Within months, the city of Sydney unanimously voted to ban gas appliances in all new houses and joined an increasing list of councils that moved to all electric buildings.
In accordance with the recommended new planning rules, developers will be asked to install electric quarries, ovens and interior heating and cooling systems in new homes.
The changes will come into force as of January 1, 2026. Gas hot water systems will be allowed for now.
The decision was unanimously adopted by the members of the Assembly at a meeting on Monday night.
The movement is part of a wider change by local governments in NSW.
Sydney has become the seventh council to adopt similar needs, including the Gulf of Canada, introducing their controls at the beginning of this month.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore welcomed new rules that require new residential buildings, large commercial buildings and hotels in Sydney to be fully electric until January 1, 2027.
“Trusting fossil fuel gas is bad for the planet, bad for our financial situation and bad for our health,” he said.
“To ensure the future of all electric buildings is just a logical step.
“These changes will create healthier and more energy -saving buildings to meet future energy standards and avoid expensive strengthening”
“They also back up the fact that households are locking on more expensive gas prices and potential famine.”
New rules will not apply to industrial uses or existing buildings.
The Council referred to the modeling of the Climate Group 350 Australia, estimating that new household peoples in Sydney can save an average of $ 626 annually from energy bills in accordance with new rules.
The report also foresees a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 1.7 million tons in a period of 40 years.

The city of Sydney will start consulting the public about more offers, including commercial building proposals, which are open to public interpretation as of June 30, including all devices, including hot water systems in new homes.
Medical experts supported the movement by specifying health concerns connected to gas tools.
Neurologists and doctors, Environment Australian Board Member Shaun Watson, said that the use of interior gas contributes to respiratory problems.
