A German tourist died after a venomous cobra featured in a snake show got into his trousers and bit his leg, authorities said.

The strange accident occurred at a luxury resort in Egypt in early April, according to the Bavarian State Police in Germany, which released details on Monday.

Authorities said, “During the snake charmer’s show, one of the snakes got into the trousers of a 57-year-old man and bit the leg of a German tourist.”

Police said the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was on holiday with two family members from Germany’s Unterallgäu region.

Officials said the snake charmer activity was part of the hotel entertainment program in Hurghada, a popular Red Sea resort known for its luxury all-inclusive packages as well as nearby desert and water excursions.

Officials said two snakes believed to be cobras were used in the show.

Investigators noted that it was not uncommon for performers to allow snakes to interact closely with audience members, as some of the snakes were reportedly placed around guests’ necks during the show.

However, during one episode of the show, it was reported that a snake bit a German tourist after getting inside his clothes.

“He later showed clear signs of poisoning and required resuscitation,” officials said.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital.

The investigation is being carried out by Germany’s Memmingen Criminal Police Inspectorate, under the direction of the Memmingen Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPPO).
