Civil engineer arrested for cheating techie of ₹1.53 crore on the pretext of marriage

On January 19, Kengeri police arrested a 32-year-old civil engineer for allegedly cheating a software engineer to the tune of Rs 1.53 crore by promising to marry her by hiding the fact that he was married.

The accused has been identified as Vijesh B. alias Vijay Raj Gowda, a native of Kunigal in Tumakuru district.

According to police, the defendant contacted the victim, a 29-year-old Whitefield resident, through a matrimonial website in March 2024. He allegedly presents himself as a successful businessman, claims to be the owner of “VRG Enterprises” and boasts of a personal fortune of ₹715 crore.

To gain her trust, Vijesh reportedly introduced the woman to his father Boregowda and once introduced his wife Soumya by falsely claiming that she was his sister.

He then told the victim that his assets had been frozen due to an alleged investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and convinced her to help him financially.

Police said the accused forced the woman to take out a loan and transfer money to him. He allegedly received a total of ₹1.75 crore, of which only ₹22 lakh was returned. When the victim demanded repayment of the remaining amount, Vijesh allegedly threatened her.

The scam was uncovered when the woman visited the accused’s house and found out that he was married to Soumya and had a child.

“He is married and has a child. We are investigating whether his wife and father mentioned in the FIR are also involved in the crime. If they are found to be involved, necessary legal action will be taken,” an investigating officer said.
