Documents released by House Republicans on Wednesday revealed that former President Bill Clinton maintained regular contact with Jeffrey Epstein years after Treasury Secretary Larry Summers was convicted on prostitution-related charges.
Among the more than 20,000 pages of documents released by the House of Representatives were a series of email exchanges between Epstein and Summers dating from 2016 to 2019 that suggested a more intimate relationship between the two than previously known. The email exchanges include banter about an unknown woman, as well as discussions about politics and President Donald Trump.
Epstein and Summers, who was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006 and also served as director of former President Obama’s National Economic Council from 2009 to 2011, exchanged emails on March 3, 2019, just a few months before his arrest, in which they discussed Summers’ correspondence with an unknown woman.
In an email to Epstein, Summers wrote of his interaction with the woman: “We talked on the phone. Then, ‘I can’t talk later.’ I guess I can talk tomorrow.” I said what are you doing? ‘I’m busy,’ he said. I said you are very shy. Then I said. Did you really reschedule our weekend together because guy number 3 was coming’ He said his schedule didn’t change after we changed our plans. I said okay, you should call me whenever you want. The tone of voice was not a good one. “I don’t want to participate in a gift-giving contest as a friend who has no use for anything.”

Epstein responded a few minutes later, saying: “He’s smart. He’s making you pay for past mistakes. Ignore the father, I’ll date the motorcycle guy, you responded well. He’s nervously affectionate, no whining seems strong.”
Months before that, in November 2018, Summers sent Epstein an email from a woman with whom he had been corresponding with the following comment: “I think it would probably be appropriate not to respond for a while.”
“Already starting to look needy 🙂 nice,” said Epstein. he replied.
On July 15, 2018, Epstein asked Summers, “Is New York nearby?” he sent an e-mail.
Summers: “I’m not sure. What’s going on?” he replied.
The next day, Epstein wrote: “I married the President [sic] An interesting person for you, from the United Nations.”
Shortly after midnight, Summers said, “Do the Russians have a thing on Trump? Today was awful even by his standards.”

Epstein replied: “My email is full of similar comments… He thinks he’s mesmerizing his opponent… He has no idea about symbolism – he has no idea about most things.”
In another exchange in 2017, Epstein wrote: “I’ve met some very bad people, none as bad as Trump. He doesn’t have a single decent cell in his body… so yeah, he’s dangerous.”
In a November 2016 email to Epstein, Summers wrote: “Spend zero effort on Trump for anything to do with me. Seeing his approach to conflict of interest, his closeness to Putin, and his cavalier response to Castro’s death, I’d better be a million miles away. Until I’m deeply embarrassed by the shit that’s sure to come, I serve myself and my country best by doing nothing that involves loyalty to them.”
A month ago, Epstein emailed Summers saying, “He’s giving leverage to four Clinton accusers. Do you remember our dinner?” Summers responded to this a few hours later: “No. What happened? Are you about to be dragged here?”

Summers was previously known to have connections to Epstein. The Wall Street Journal reported on another post in 2023 in which Summers asked Epstein for advice on fundraising for a project by his wife, Harvard Professor Elisa New.
