Actor George Clooney told “CBS Sunday Morning” that he doesn’t regret writing the New York Times opinion piece urging former President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election.
CBS News reporter Seth Doane asked the Academy Award-winning actor if he would rewrite this article knowing that President Donald Trump had been re-elected. Clooney said he would, but added that he thought it was a mistake to run against Vice President Kamala Harris without entering the primary.
Clooney said, “We had a chance. As I wrote in the column, I wanted there to be a primary election.” “Let’s test that quickly and take action right away. I think it was Kamala’s mistake that she had to race against her own record. If the point of running away is to say, ‘I’m not that person,’ that’s very hard to do. That’s hard to do, and that’s why she was given a very difficult task. I think it was a mistake, to be honest.”

He continued, “But we’re where we are. They’re saying we’re going to lose more House seats. So I don’t know. Not doing that would be saying, ‘I’m not going to tell the truth.'”
Clooney, a longtime Democratic fundraiser, called on Biden to drop out of the race in a July 2024 essay following Biden’s performance during his only presidential debate against Trump.
“It’s very sad to say, but the Joe Biden I was with at the fundraiser three weeks ago was not the Joe ‘big deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed in the debate,” Clooney wrote.

During the interview, Clooney also responded to Hunter Biden’s profanity-filled tirade in which he accused the actor of lying about his father’s mental state and sabotaging his campaign on behalf of the Obama team.
“I could spend a lot of time refuting a lot of the things he said because a lot of the things he said were outright lies: Obama didn’t force me to do this, it wasn’t my fundraiser, it was my fundraiser — everything,” Clooney said.

He continued, “But the truth is, I don’t think it’s helpful to anyone, especially to himself, to look back like that. I don’t think it’s helpful to the Democratic Party, and so I’m going to wish him well for his continued recovery, and I hope he does well, and I’ll just leave it at that. I have a lot of personal opinions on this, but I don’t think it’s helpful to debate him publicly.”
