Cloudflare down: From Zerodha and Groww to Shopify, check list of sites affected by outage on December 5

Cloudflare was hit with yet another outage on Friday, December 5, causing widespread outages to major websites and online services around the world; It is the second such outage the company has faced in the last few months.

The company, which powers much of the internet infrastructure, confirmed that parts of their network were affected during planned maintenance work.

According to the official Cloudflare System Status page, maintenance activity began at 09:00 UTC on December 5, stating that planned maintenance is ongoing and updates will follow as needed.

Which sites are closed today?

The outage affected many major Indian brokers, including Zerodha, Groww, Angle One, and Upstox, as all these platforms rely on Cloudflare for their network infrastructure. Users flocked to social media to complain about login errors, delayed transactions, and periods of complete unavailability when Cloudflare’s network went down.

All these financial and investment platforms were down during market hours, causing serious inconvenience to active investors. Services appear to have now been restored, but further details about the outage are still awaited.

Zerodha responded to the outages by advising users to rely on Kite WhatsApp as a backup to manage their transactions during the Cloudflare outage. The issues have since been resolved and trading activities have returned to normal.

“Cloudflare global outage has been resolved. Kite services have been restored. You can now trade normally. We apologize for any inconvenience,” the company said in its next post.

Other apps that have been shut down include Shopify, Zoom and Valorant. Global editing and productivity platforms were also affected by the outage. Canva, widely used by designers and digital artists, has become inaccessible. QuillBot, a popular writing and editing tool, also crashed.

Cloudflare outage: Netizens upset

Data from industry outage tracker Downdetector showed that the Cloudflare outage had logged more than 2,100 reports as of Friday afternoon. The audience started receiving outage reports starting at 13:50.

Previous reports stated that Cloudflare suffered a similar large-scale outage last month, temporarily affecting global platforms such as X, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Spotify and PayPal.

Several netizens have expressed their frustration and concern over the repeated outages and a series of cyber attacks that have shaken various industries in the past few months.

“Isn’t there an alternative to Cloudflare? I think their definition of securing the internet is to make the internet inaccessible,” one netizen wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“At this point @Cloudflare is taking down our sites more than hackers,” another X user said.

Due to increasing complaints, even Downdetector became inaccessible for a short time. The sudden surge in traffic overwhelmed the platform as users flocked to verify whether their preferred services were down.
