A total of 3,674 journalists have registered as members of the Journalist Welfare Board and funds worth ₹8.56 lakh have been provided so far for the welfare of more than 80 journalists, the statement said.
Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday directed to provide monthly pension of ₹12,000 to 42 retired journalists. Minister MP Saminathan, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam and senior officials were also present.
Funds from the Journalist Welfare Fund have been provided to benefit a total of 59 journalist families since the DMK government assumed office, an official statement said. It also increased the amount donated to journalists’ families from the Prime Minister’s Public Assistance Fund in case of death.
Since assuming office in May 2021, the State government has provided funds of ₹ 30.61 lakh for the medical treatment of 16 journalists. It was stated that in July 2022, the fund for medical treatment of journalists has been increased from 2 lakh rupees to 2.5 lakh rupees.
