Political commentator Leigh McGowan argued on Friday: “CNN NewsNightWith Abby Phillips, President Donald Trump’s decision to escalate the US conflict with Iran raises questions about the government’s spending priorities.
He complained that the United States was spending billions of dollars on war while tens of thousands of Americans died each year without health insurance.
“You say 46 Americans have died, so we have to attack this country. 68,000 Americans a year die here at home because they don’t have health insurance,” McGowan said. “So if we’re going to spend billions of dollars on something, wouldn’t it make more sense to spend it here on healthcare, saving American lives, than bombing another country?”

This exchange came during a panel discussion about the Trump administration’s military action in Iran; This panel also included reports of the deployment of thousands of US Marines near Kharg Island, a strategic Iranian oil export hub.
McGowan argued that the administration has not offered a clear exit strategy and warned that the conflict could drain American resources that could address domestic problems, such as health care and social programs.

New York Post reporter Lydia Moynihan challenged McGowan, arguing that crippling Iran’s global terrorist apparatus would be a clear victory for the United States.
“We have already seen the complete crippling of this regime,” Moynihan said. “The military has been clear. We do not want them to buy nuclear weapons. We want to reduce their missile supply. We are already achieving those goals.”
Moynihan acknowledged that Americans want the war to end “tomorrow” but that the US military has already dealt significant blows to Iran’s capabilities.
McGowan reiterated that he was pro-military but wanted to see the end of the war.
“I’m definitely pro-military, so I’m against this war,” McGowan said. “Not only do you need to have a plan and a reason, but you also need to have an exit strategy. You need to know why you’re there, what you’re doing, what your purpose is. We don’t have that.”

Trump argued that military action was necessary to deter Iranian aggression and protect American personnel and allies in the Middle East.
“For decades, it has been the policy of the United States to never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon,” Trump said during his State of the Union speech. “Decades of years. Since seizing control of this proud nation 47 years ago, the regime and its murderous proxies have spread nothing but terror, death and hatred.”
