Manchester United caretaker manager: Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are front runners

Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as frontrunners to become Manchester United’s interim managers until the end of the season.

The former players, who both previously managed United, are preparing to meet face to face with the club’s management.

Carrick was a key part of Solskjaer’s coaching team when he replaced Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in 2018, so it’s not out of the question for the pair to work together.

United’s current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has also been approached about the job and will continue in his role as interim manager until a caretaker is appointed. The former midfielder will take charge of United’s first game on Wednesday, when they visit Burnley in the Premier League (20:15 GMT).

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also thought to be a candidate.

Amorim was ousted Monday after a tumultuous 14-month tenure.

United plan to name Amorim’s permanent successor in the summer.

One player told BBC Sport he thought the role could be shared by more than one contender, or that Fletcher could remain in charge until the end of the season if the next two matches yield positive results.

Solskjaer initially took on a similar role when United sacked Mourinho in 2018 and then became full-time manager for three years before being sacked in November 2021.

Carrick had a three-game stint as interim boss following Solskjaer’s sacking before leaving the club in December 2021.

The former England midfielder has been out of work since being sacked by Championship club Middlesborough last June after two-and-a-half years in charge.

Solskjaer was fired by Beşiktaş in August.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, now at Marseille, are understood to be the first candidates for the full-time job.

Glasner, who won the FA Cup with the Eagles last season, was asked about the connection at a press conference on Tuesday.

He said: “I’m the manager of Crystal Palace and there’s no point in asking me any more questions about it.”
