Comedian Pat Smith’s viral immigration parody sparks debate online

A. viral social media skit immigration has reignited a familiar debate about assimilation and social cohesion. The video dispels the idea that Western host countries are expected to be culturally subservient to immigrants who accept the common good without adopting common norms.

Comedian Pat Smith played a caricature of an immigrant who moves from the UK to China, culturally disconnected, openly resentful of his host society and still dependent on government support.

Smith’s character comes from a Western country and, while resisting assimilation into life abroad, expects accommodations that suit his sensibilities, mirroring those who argue that this behavior is acceptable from foreigners moving to the UK.

“Okay, I think we can all agree that everything here is a little too Chinese,” Smith begins, posing in front of a green-screen backdrop of a traditional Chinese street.

He says he doesn’t eat noodles and wants traditional British food “tailored for me”. Throughout the sketch, he is repeatedly surprised by resistance from someone off-screen (presumably Chinese) he is talking to.

“I don’t think you understand. I’m not from here, okay? I left because I didn’t like the UK, okay? So I need you to change everything to make it feel like the UK.”

The character says he can’t work due to “anxiety” and asks, “When will I get my money?” he asks. before proposing the establishment of a British enclave in China.

“I also noticed that there were a lot of Chinese people here,” he says. “And I was thinking we could get a bunch of me in here and we have our own little space and then you can all fuck off.”

Faced with false pushback, Smith’s character demands to be heard.

“I was thinking, if a bunch of me come here, then we can vote for one of them to be in charge, and then we can all start telling you how to live.”

He goes on to say that he plans to organize anti-China marches for which he will need state protection, and ends the sketch by admitting that he is in the country illegally, pretending to be surprised when he learns that he will be sent to prison.

The video has been viewed more than 21 million times on X and more than a million times on TikTok; At the time of publication, it had nearly 300,000 likes and more than 11,000 comments on Instagram.

“I’ll be honest, I just thought it was funny, I’m not that into politics, but if I see an opportunity to heat things up, I’ll do anything,” Smith told Fox News Digital.

He also commented on his own Instagram post: “Unfortunately I don’t have time to respond to all these comments, but I just wanted to say that I have absolutely no idea how this skit relates to politics.”

Britain’s Labor government is toughening its stance on immigration as it tries to address the growing popularity of the populist UK Reform Party, which has taken a hard-line approach to immigration.
