Lægreid gave an emotional interview to Norwegian television following the incident.
The tearful biathlete confessed to cheating on his girlfriend of six months, confessing in person a week ago.
Lægreid added that it was ‘the worst week of my life’ and said through tears: ‘I had one gold medal in my life… My eyes only see that. I don’t know what I want to achieve by saying this…I wish I could share this with him.’
The Olympian said he wanted to be a ‘good role model’ but ‘I have to admit when I make mistakes’.
At a press conference later in the day, Lægreid was asked if he had heard from his girlfriend following his emotional comments on television.
“I did not receive any reaction from the girl I mentioned,” Lægreid said.
‘I’m happy because maybe he didn’t see it and maybe he will see it at the right time.

‘Because I already hate him and I hope this can make him realize how much I love him,’ she added.
When asked about the identity of his girlfriend, the athlete refused to reveal her name out of respect.
He’s probably still processing last week’s message, but hopefully there’s light at the end of the tunnel for both of us. And he declared that he could still love me.
Lægreid revealed that he decided to go public with his infidelity the night before his big race, telling the television station: ‘Last night I got some kind of explanation that I should drop this bombshell… Then we’ll see what happens. I’ve got nothing to lose.’
Lægreid’s teammate Johannes Dale-Skjevdal later revealed to the broadcaster that the bronze medalist had told him about his infidelity, saying: ‘We knew about it, yes. I don’t have much comment on this for now. It’s good that he’s open about it and if he wants to talk about things that’s fine.’
His other teammate, Martin Uldal, said he was unaware of Lægreid’s situation.
‘I’ve noticed there’s a little bit different about him but I don’t really know why. I thought this might be a little annoying. This is very sad to hear. “It’s a really difficult, difficult situation,” he said.
He said in an interview last year that he refused to hug his girlfriend for two months while he was preparing for the World Championships. It’s unclear if this is the same girlfriend.

Speaking to Norwegian news outlet Madshus, he said at the time: ‘I haven’t hugged my girlfriend since the Lavaze training camp before the World Championships. ‘I didn’t dare hug him and he wasn’t allowed to stay in the flat last week.’
He also described himself as an ‘old-school psychopath’ and explained that he did his best to ‘avoid people and avoid getting sick’.
‘I I live alone, I cook my own meals, I haven’t been to the market since I came home,’ Lægreid added.
Viewers were quick to react to the athlete’s TV interview on Tuesday, with one X user commenting: ‘The heartbreak runs so deep here that the athlete is desperately trying to win his love back in true Hollywood style. I salute the man!’
Others mocked the athlete’s dramatic interview, with one social media user writing: ‘Stupidest thing I’ve ever seen… You’ll never win women back that way. Only in the movie, never in real life.”
The admission came after he won his first Olympic bronze medal in the nerve-wracking men’s 20km individual biathlon race at the Antholz-Anterselva Biathlon Arena on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Johan-Olav Botn took the last lap by storm and won the Olympic gold medal, while Frenchman Eric Perrot came second, 14.8 seconds behind the winner, and secured the silver medal.
Laegreid made the most of his beautiful day at the range, hitting 19 of 20 shots to take the bronze medal position ahead of Finland’s experienced Olli Hiidensalo and 48.3 seconds behind winner Botn.

Lægreid had a difficult season during the World Cup and was excluded from the mixed relay at the Olympics.
Just a day before winning the bronze medal at the Winter Olympics, he admitted that he did not have high expectations for himself.
Speaking to NRK on Monday, he said: ‘I will not hide the fact that I do not have high expectations for myself.
‘But I also realize that after the way the season has gone, I’m a bit of an underdog now. ‘I never imagined I’d be in this position, but maybe this is my chance to win a medal at the Olympics.’
