Bobby Davro has revealed he was forced to perform stand-up gigs during some of the saddest times of his life, three years after the death of fiancée Vicky Wright.

The 57-year-old comedy legend recalled struggling with grief and crying as he walked on stage for a performance, then breaking down again when he returned to his dressing room.

Speaking during Hayley Palmer’s performance to the Audience at the Hippodrome in London’s Leicester Square, she insisted that being a comedian had helped her.

He said: ‘I go on stage but as a comedian it helps, laughter is the best medicine’ and then joked: ‘If you don’t have erectile dysfunction it’s cruel’.

‘When I’m at my saddest, you go on stage and you have to think about what you’re doing, you go on stage and it helps.’

Bobby continued: ‘I’ve cried many times in my life when I’ve lost people, and I cried all the way to the venue.’

‘Go ahead and do the show, people laugh, you hear the laughter and then you go back to the dressing room and feel sad again.’

Bobby was left devastated when his partner, the daughter of former England captain Billy Wright and Beverley Sisters singer Joy Beverley, passed away in May 2023, aged 63, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bobby shared a message expressing his sadness over Vicky’s passing, describing it as ‘devastating’.

The former EastEnders star wrote: ‘It’s been a little over a week since my beautiful @vickywright5459 I have left this world and only now do I feel strong enough to share my feelings.

‘I would like to thank everyone for the support and expressions of love and kindness you have shown to me, Vicky’s family and loved ones…

‘It’s devastating and incredibly painful to think we’ll never be able to hear her voice, hear her laugh, look into her beautiful eyes, see her smile to hug and kiss her.

‘He will be in my thoughts and my heart forever. He was my Schluffe and I loved him and always will.’

Bobby later shared a stunning photo of Vicky and wrote: ‘I will miss you so much and love you forever. May my beautiful Schluffe rest in peace. No more pain, honey. ‘No more pain.’

Bobby returned to work by performing just a day after Vicky’s death – promising to perform despite the pain so as not to disappoint fans who had bought tickets to the show.

Despite his sadness, Davro took to the stage at the Tivoli Theater in Wimborne on May 5 to perform four shows for his friend Jim Davidson’s Ustreme online comedy channel.

Davidson took to his YouTube channel to confirm Bobby’s appearance, praising his fellow showbiz legend for being a ‘trooper’ who knew the show had to go on.

The former Big Break presenter said: ‘We have to say goodbye to Vicky Wright. A sad old day. I’m here in Wimborne at the Tivoli Theatre, on the set of Ustream’s award-winning panel show Left, Right and Centre, sitting in Miles Crawford’s chair, and we’re all a bit quiet today.

The following year Bobby suffered a minor stroke after falling ill and fainting during a live show in Surrey.

He had just walked off stage after receiving a standing ovation at his sold-out concert before experiencing what he described as a “funny twist”..

A source told Sun: ‘His condition has greatly improved and he is now resting at home. Bobby is clearly feeling much better, describing the proximity to the hospital and the excellent care he received there as ‘a real stroke of luck’.
