Congress and DMK to begin seat-sharing talks next week: K Selvaperunthagai

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai said on Friday that the Congress will begin seat-sharing talks with its long-time ally DMK.

“We are holding talks. We will resume talks in about a week,” Selvaperunthagai told media persons in Tiruvallur. he said.

His comments came after DMK MP Kanimozhi met opposition leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Wednesday to resolve the seat-sharing impasse between the ruling DMK and the Congress ahead of the upcoming state elections.

According to him, the Congress believes it will get the expected number of seats. Selvaperunthagai said, “We are not putting pressure on our ally. We will ask and get what we want, and DMK will give it (to us).” he said.

The Congress won 18 of the 25 seats it contested in the 2021 state elections.

Selvaperunthagai went on to take a sarcastic tone about AIADMK chief and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah and said that Palaniswami met the BJP top brass “in a mask”. “Unlike that meeting, Kanimozhi’s meeting with our leader was simple and dignified,” he said.
A person familiar with the matter told ET that the meeting between Kanimozhi and Rahul Gandhi was “extremely positive” and the parties resolved some differences and agreed on a way forward. According to the person, the next step will be the formation of a committee by the DMK. “The committee will decide the exact number of seats in which DMK and its alliance partners will contest. A more detailed form will be given after this,” the person said. The meeting between the two party leaders took place in the backdrop of DMK’s Madurai North MLA G Thalapathi making harsh comments against the Congress in Madurai on Monday.
