Corbyn and Sultana will not lead new left-wing party

The new left party founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana voted not to have a single leader.

At the party’s founding conference in Liverpool, voters opted to be led by a panel of members, avoiding a potentially explosive leadership race between Sultana and Corbyn.

The party also overwhelmingly supported plans to allow its members to remain in other left-wing groups just days later. several members were expelled Because he is a member of the Socialist Workers Party.

He will announce his name on Sunday evening, ending months of speculation.

Corbyn will close the conference by announcing the result of the vote, which saw members choose between Your Party, Our Party, Popular Alliance and For the Many.

A party spokesman said the new leadership model “shows that we do politics differently, from the bottom up rather than the top down”.

“We have a professional political class in Westminster that is increasingly disconnected from ordinary people, serving corporations and billionaires rather than the communities they are supposed to represent,” the spokesman added.

“With a truly member-led party, we will offer something different: democratic, grassroots, accountable.”

According to the model, the party will be governed by a Central Executive Committee (CEC) consisting of 16 non-politicians elected by the members, rather than a single leader.

The decision, approved by just 51 percent of members, paved the way for a leadership race that many expected between Corbyn and Sultana.

A rivalry between the party’s two best-known figures could reopen many of the divisions that marred the fledgling party’s founding.

Since then He opened the party with a surprise announcement in July. Sultana clashed repeatedly with party officials.

And less than a month after the founding conference, MPs Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed left the group overseeing the project over the “toxic culture”, particularly towards Muslim men.

Before leaving, both Hussein and Mohammed put their names to a letter criticizing Sultana for failing to transfer an estimated £800,000 of Your Party’s donations, which belonged to a company it controlled.

Sultana transferred £600,000 and promised to pay the remaining money “as soon as possible as the legal details become clearer”.

Sultana did not attend the opening day of the party conference in protest at the expulsion of some members who retained membership in other left-wing groups such as the Socialist Workers Party.

On Sunday, the new conference overwhelmingly approved allowing members to hold dual memberships in the future; This was Sultana’s preferred option.

The CEC will be able to exclude groups deemed to be at odds with your Party’s values and will also oversee the party’s strategy, personnel and resources.

The “democratic whip” system will allow the CEC to instruct MPs to vote in line with party policy on key issues, but local branches will decide on sanctions for breaking the whip.

Under the new constitution, the Alliance of Independent MPs, comprising Corbyn, Ayoub Khan and Shockat Adam, will oversee the selection of candidates for next year’s local elections, alongside a member oversight committee of randomly selected members.

It is unknown whether Sultana will play a role in the election process.
