Cory Booker says Democrats have ‘failed this moment’ and calls for new leaders | Democrats

Democratic senator Cory Booker of New Jersey renewed his call for new leadership of the Democratic party, saying the party is “failing right now.”
“Overall, our party has failed right now,” Booker said Sunday. “I called for a renewal of the generation, because this left-right divide is killing our country and our enemies know it.” He also said “purity tests” within the party were leading to further divisions in the United States.
during a report On NBC’s Meet the Press, Booker also said the Democratic party has a “very small coalition,” especially as the party tries to confront “new challenges” including Trump administration policies and the expansion of artificial intelligence and technology.
Booker’s comments come at a time when divisions within the party are growing. disappointment He’s growing up with Democratic senator Chuck Schumer. Some Democrats, particularly on the party’s more progressive wing, have discussed replacing Schumer as the minority leader as the midterm elections approach. Progressive senators reportedly see Schumer as an obstacle to change for the party and an obstacle to opposing Donald Trump because of his centrist politics.
Wall StreetJournal reported last week It was stated that some senators, including Chris Murphy of Connecticut, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Tina Smith of Minnesota, chatted with their colleagues, expressed their disappointment in Schumer and discussed strategies to remove him from the leadership position.
The Journal reported that some lawmakers are conducting unofficial counts to see if there are enough votes to remove Schumer from office. Concern and frustration with Schumer are widespread within the party, with many speculating about how to pressure him to step aside, according to the report. Some Senate Democrats have pushed for Schumer to retire in 2028.
Last fall the New York Times reported A group of progressive senators, including Smith, Murphy, Warren and others, are reportedly in a Signal chat called “Fight Club” to counter Schumer’s preferred centrist candidates ahead of this year’s midterm elections.
But on Sunday’s State of the Union on CNN, Sen. Andy Kim pushed back against accusations that the Democratic party is divided, saying, “This is the most united Senate Democrats I’ve ever seen,” adding that he supports Schumer and the Democratic leadership “right now.”
In Sunday’s interview, Booker also talked about a potential presidential run. When pressed, he said he was “absolutely not ruling out” running for president again.
His current book tour has fueled speculation that Booker wants to run for president again. The title of his newest book, Stand, is a reference to his record-breaking filibuster in the Senate last year, in which he addressed the Trump administration’s policies for 25 hours.
During his Meet the Press speech, Booker also touched on the US-Israeli war against Iran and questioned the Trump administration’s plan to escalate the conflict. Booker did not directly deny the US government’s intervention in Iran, but he criticized the administration’s handling of the issue. He also discussed the partial government shutdown and ongoing negotiations in the Senate, saying he refused to vote for more funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agency tasked with Trump’s anti-immigrant operations.
“Americans want a new generation of leaders who show they can lift up the entire country,” Booker added. “It is time for a new vision of our country that is much more unifying, brings people together, and does not deepen divisions.”
