The data obtained from a recent government questionnaire show that the cost of private kindergarten education in India is disproportionately high. Two data sets Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education 2025 Watch out for this result.

First, the cost difference between private and public schools is significantly shrinking at higher levels, while the largest leading role is more than 20 times wide. Secondly, in the private system itself, unlike public schools, where costs increase approximately nine times, it only rises marginalized at the successive schooling levels, which suggests that a large share of private school expenses are prefunned at the entry phase.

The data includes only students who report spending on zero schools (‘reported’ students). In addition, private schools refer to private schools without associate. The survey was conducted in April-June 2025.

In the graph below, the average school expenditures per reported student (in order to RUPY) (figures on the rods) shows. Rural areas. Thick numbers are floors.

The following graph shows situations that have the largest private government school cost gap. The numbers are fold.

The gap in Odisha is over 40 times and Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat more than 35 times. In rural areas, the gap was the highest Chhattisgarh (more than 100 times), followed by Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (more than 40 times each) and Gujarat and Karnataka (more than 35 times). In particular, Gujarat and Karnataka appear on both rural and urban lists.

The figures offered so far show those previously saved-the cost of the cost-duty school is at the widest first level. The following graph shows the average difference of spending between middle and higher secondary education levels per reported student.

In India, average school expenditures per student in the first and higher secondary levels were compared in the graph above. In public schools, the kindergarten level increased from 823 to 7,308 in rural areas from 823 to 7,308. In urban public schools, the increase was about 4.7 times more modest.

On the other hand, in private schools, costs increased from 17,988 per year at the level of kindergarten, and higher in rural areas to 33,567, less than a two-storey increase. Similarly, the increase was twice in urban areas in private schools. The numbers in the graph above show that the cost increases at the levels are marginal, which shows that the costs are loaded from a possible front.
