This study highlights Costco’s advantage in consistent pricing across the U.S., showing how warehouse clubs maintain lower prices even when compared to major discount stores.

This means that anything that encourages Costco members to visit their warehouse saves them money.
“Generally speaking, we find that about half of the members who will shop at the gas station will also cross-shop at the warehouse,” Millerchip shared during a visit to Costco. 2026 second quarter earnings release.
Alan Gin, an economics professor at the University of San Diego, believes the motivation for Costco’s aggressive gas price strategy has to do with the way Costco makes money.
“Most of their profits come from memberships,” he said ABC News.
Gin says up to 70 percent of Costco’s profits come from the $65 to $130 customers pay for the right to shop at its warehouses.
