Costco takes big step to fix one of members’ biggest complaints

for 20 years costco Member, there are so many things I love about the store. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t keep paying membership fees every year.
Some of my favorite perks of Costco membership include bulk savings, cheap food court, and the option to return almost any item for a full refund.
But there are some things don’t do that Like at Costco; crowded parking lots, having to scan a membership card at the entrance, and long lines to leave the store after filling your cart.
And I’m definitely not the only one who feels this way.
One Reddit topicCostco members highlighted the sometimes awful experience at the store.
“While 90-95% of the customer experience is great, the most painful part of any retail store I can think of is the last 15-20 minutes,” one user said.
“I thought self-checkout would help, but without a scanner gun at every station it’s nearly impossible for most people to complete these lines on time,” another said.
It’s clear that long wait times at checkout are a major pain point for members. Luckily, Costco finally realized this.
Costco’s management team has almost no clue about member satisfaction, or lack thereof. The company goes to great lengths to offer low prices and excellent customer service on the products it sells.
But Costco also knows that improving the checkout process is important for member satisfaction and retention. And the company is now taking major steps to solve this problem.
During Costco’s tenure 2026 Q2 earnings release“Across warehouses, we are seeing meaningful improvements in payment speed and employee productivity as a result of both our mobile wallet enhancements, pharmacy prepayments, and the introduction of employee pre-screening technology,” said CEO Ron Vachris.
If you’re a long-time Costco shopper, you know that pre-screening is nothing new. But that’s not the only step Costco is taking to get members out the door faster when they’re ready to check out.

Vachris also said the company 2026 second quarter earnings release“We are also piloting self-checkout stations that will allow members to seamlessly pay for pre-scan orders, with an average processing time of approximately eight seconds. Early results show this is improving traffic flow, and we’ve received great feedback from members.”
Frankly, this could be huge.
If Costco can significantly shorten its average transaction time, that could be the key to retaining members and attracting new ones.
