A search continues for a group of illegal e-bike and dirt bike riders who pelted police cars with stones and bullets on the NSW Central Coast on Sunday.

NSW Police said an officer was hit with a rock and the windshield of a police car was severely damaged during the incident.

Police said a highway patrol car was driving on Ocean View Drive in Wamberal when a group of about 20 tricycles and dirt bikes approached from the other direction.

As the group passed, one of the drivers fired a bullet at the police car, causing serious damage to the windshield.

Shortly afterwards the group of drivers are alleged to have damaged four more police cars on Terrigal Drive, Terrigal.

A driver threw a rock through the window of a police car, injuring an officer in the arm, police said.
