CPI(M) demands increase in rearing cost of broiler chicken

CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam on Thursday urged the State Government to convene a tripartite meeting involving broiler chicken farmers, poultry companies and the Animal Husbandry Department to ensure fair wages to farmers.
In a statement, he said poultry farmers across the state have been demanding increased rearing costs and their ongoing struggle has led to increased chicken prices in markets.
He noted that the last tripartite meeting was held in September 2013, after which the cost of cultivation was increased by 15 percent in 2013 and another 5 percent in 2014. “The government should immediately arrange a meeting to resolve the crisis,” he said.
