Crane collapses onto passenger train in deadly Thailand accident

At least 22 people died and 64 were injured when a construction crane crashed into a passenger train in Thailand on Wednesday, officials said.

The crane crashed into a moving train on its way from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani in Nakhon Ratchasima province, causing the train to derail and catch fire, according to the province’s Public Relations Department.

The ministry said in a post on Facebook that the fire was under control and authorities were searching for people believed to be trapped on the train.

Minister of Transport Piphat Ratchakitprakan said that there were approximately 200 people on the train and the investigation was ongoing.

“Nineteen bodies were found, but there are still some bodies inside the train carriages that could not be lifted because the crane started to slide, so the team retreated for fear of danger,” said Police Colonel Thatchapon Chinnawong, according to Reuters.

Chinnawong added that those who died were in two of the three wagons that were hit by the crane.
