Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, pointed out Mamdani-Trump voters, AOC-Trump voters and Obama-Trump voters as they face the tough path to victory in the Texas Senate race on Tuesday.

MS NOW host Chris Hayes asked Crockett about people questioning his ability to win “the 8 to 10% of Republican voters needed to win this race.” Hayes cited voters who support both President Donald Trump and Democrats like Zohran Mamdani, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former President Barack Obama.

Crocket, who launched his Texas Senate bid on Monday, has pushed back against the idea that he needs to win a certain percentage of Republican voters and said he hopes to mobilize his base in a way that Democratic candidates have failed to do in the past.

Hayes noted Georgia Senate races, including Democratic Sens. He said Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are the closest model after their tight wins in the 2020 and 2022 cycles. “They definitely got high levels of turnout, but they also got crossover voters,” he said.

The lawmaker acknowledged that Texas is a tough place to win, but said some Trump voters are dissatisfied and pointed to recent congressional elections in Tennessee that were a closer race than in the past.

“I don’t think anyone who’s super enamored with Trump is going to vote for me or any other Democrat. That’s the truth. I think it’s a matter of who’s going to talk to people and make them understand that they’re going to fight for themselves. That’s why you have Mamdani-Trump voters. That’s why you have AOC-Trump voters. That’s why you have Obama-Trump voters,” he told Hayes.

“Let me tell you something, Mamdani did not back down in any way from her rhetoric against the president in the Oval Office. She stood there and said what he said about him being a fascist. But he was able to win over those voters. So Democrats believe the only way to win is to be soft and sound like a Republican, which is not true,” Crockett said.

He argued that voters are looking for someone to fight for them, and that’s what he plans to do.

Crockett similarly said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday that he didn’t need to win over Trump’s supporters, saying that wasn’t his “goal.”

CNN host Laura Coates asked Crockett if he should seek support from Trump voters.

“Our goal is definitely to talk to people. No, we’re not, we don’t need to. Our goal is to make sure we’re able to engage with people who haven’t been talked to in the past, because there are so many people, especially in the state of Texas, who are ignored,” he said.

Crockett is trying to become the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1988.
