The Istanbul talks followed a temporary ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Türkiye following allegations that Pakistan violated Afghan airspace earlier this month. Islamabad’s attack triggered a retaliatory response from Kabul.

Kabul’s Airspace Claims

Tolo News sources also stated that Afghanistan reiterated its commitment to prevent the use of Afghan territory against Pakistan but demanded that Islamabad stop violating Afghan airspace and stop US drone operations within Afghan borders.

However, sources added that Pakistan refused to accept these conditions.

Commenting on the impasse, former Afghan Ambassador to France Omar Samad questioned Pakistan’s intentions, saying: “It is not entirely clear what the intentions of both sides were. Was Pakistan really looking for practical solutions or was it trying to appear as if it wanted to solve the problems?”

According to Tolo News, Afghan Defense Minister Mawlawi Muhammad Yaqub Mujahid rejected the request, stating that “Pakistan and other countries use the label of terrorism against their rivals for political purposes.”

Before the Istanbul talks, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif warned that Islamabad could resort to military action if the dialogue did not yield results. In response, Afghanistan emphasized that it was determined to resolve disputes through diplomatic channels.
