Meghan Markle has been branded a “hypocrite” after sharing a post calling for more action to protect children online. Princess Lilibet on Instagram. Speaking at a memorial in Geneva for people who have died after being harmed digitally, Meghan described children’s online safety as a “public health issue”.
The Duchess made the statement at the opening of the Missing Screen Memorial on Sunday, attended by World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“Today’s children are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at all costs: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement and endless exposure to harmful content they are not looking for,” he told global health leaders, ministers and families affected by online harm.
Meghan added that new technologies such as artificial intelligence are not only repeating past mistakes but accelerating and amplifying them, and the danger is now spreading globally.
He said: “We are seeing new forms of harm emerging faster than our systems are prepared to respond, affecting children at alarming scales and across borders.
“But these consequences are not inevitable, and prevention starts with a simple principle: Children should be safe by design, not by chance.
“Because danger now travels globally—instantaneously, invisibly, up close. And our guards must do the same.”
He called on participants to raise their voices and demand better from the platforms that shape children’s lives.
