Cyclone Montha: Evacuation of nearly 10,000 people begins in Konaseema

As winds are expected to continue along with heavy rains due to cyclone ‘Montha’, Dr. An estimated 10,000 people are being evacuated from the coastline in BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.

In a meeting attended by Cyclone Montha Special Officer and Director, Education Department, V. Vijaya Ramaraju, Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar said around 10,000 people living in coastal areas were evacuated to safer places in shelter homes.

“Until Monday [October 27, 2025] We aimed to evacuate 6,000 people out of the 10,000 people expected to be affected along the coastline in the evening. “Those living in thatched houses are being evacuated immediately,” he said.

Regarding cyclone preparedness measures, Mr. Kumar stated that hoardings have been removed along 400 kilometers of State highways and 60 kilometers of National Highway-216 as strong winds are expected in the next two days.

Irrigation Department officials have also been told not to release Godavari water into branch canals to prevent submergence of the standing paddy crop due to heavy rains expected to continue for the next 48 hours.

Farmers were told not to go to the fields to avoid any negative effects due to lightning and strong winds.

Pregnant women were referred to hospitals

About 126 pregnant women whose birth was expected to occur within two weeks, Dr. BR Ambedkar was shifted to nearby hospitals along the coastline in Konaseema district. All of them are currently under the care of doctors and will remain in their respective government hospitals until Cyclone Montha makes landfall and dissipates.

All basic needs and materials are stored in 120 aid camps opened within the scope of aid operations.
