Cyclone Montha likely to bring heavy rainfall in Kerala; orange alert for three districts

With the cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast, an increase in rainfall activity is expected in Kerala over the next two days. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Machilipattanam and Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday evening, October 28, 2025.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, October 27, 2025, the deep depression over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjoining southwestern Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ on Sunday night. Approximately 640 km east-southeast of Chennai, 710 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 740 km west of Port Blair. (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), 740 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 860 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha).

The system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam as a severe cyclonic storm on the evening or night of October 28, with maximum sustained wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph. Under the influence of the system, parts of Kerala are expected to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday.

While very heavy rain warnings have been issued for three districts – Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Monday, the rest of the state, except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, has been put on yellow alert where isolated heavy rains are likely.

As the system moves inland along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday, rainfall activity is expected to decrease and gradually weaken after landfall.
