Only one grocery store remains open on Amelia Island, residents voice concerns over access to food

Only one grocery remains open on Amelia Island, residents express concerns about accessing dinner

Since two of the three major markets of the island are closed for renovation, the shopping grocery shop for the residents of Fernandina Beach has become increasingly difficult, just a store, Harris Teamer, open to serve the entire community.

Harris Teeter recently celebrated the re -opening of the Amelia Island position. However, those who shop with increasing demand are long lines, limited parking space and increasing disappointment.

While the crowds pack the newly re -opened Harris Teeter, some customers had to park along the sidewalks and side streets. This has caused problems for drivers like Charlotte Roberts.

“When I came back, I noticed that the entire side of my car was engraved by another car, Rob Roberts said.

The voltage in the store is a process that is expected to take six to eight months to start transformation into an Aldi after Winn-Dixie has closed in late July. Meanwhile, the island’s Publix has been closed since April and is not expected to reopen until the next autumn.

“Winn-Dixie was here and Publix was here. We miss them. Everyone miss them,” he said.

“We are not satisfied with this. Nobody is happy. I will start coming out of the island, I think,” he added.

It is not a realistic option for some residents, especially for those who do not have reliable transportation, to shop for the island to eat.

“Crazy because I do a lot of work with Barnabas. There are many people in bad situations and they live in that area of the city.

To resolve these concerns, Fernandina Beach City Council recently discussed the proposal to start a summer space attempt to help residents to reach the markets.

However, the city officials said the plan was not progressing.

Until more options return, many local people should travel on the island for their most basic needs or trust the neighbors.
