Two more held for Delhi blast; Al-Falah University faces audit

A medical college professor and a medical student from Jammu and Kashmir were detained in connection with the car blast near the Red Fort in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

Jammu and Kashmir police have issued a Red Corner Notice against another doctor from Kashmir, whose brother has been arrested, who is believed to be currently in Dubai. Dozens of people were detained in J&K’s raids on persons and properties linked to terror networks.

Haryana police also seized two vehicles belonging to Umar Nabi, the prime suspect and sole occupant of the car that exploded in Delhi on Thursday, killing 13 people. Delhi police collected forensic evidence from a Jain temple and a market near the blast site and sources said the agencies identified the shops from which the suspects supplied ammonium nitrate and also detained the shop owners for further investigation.

The Union government has ordered a forensic audit of all records of Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where some of the suspects studied or worked. Following the high-level probe headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, sources told PTI that the Enforcement Directorate and other financial investigation agencies have been asked to check the money trail of the private institution.

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) also suspended Al-Falah University’s membership, saying it “does not appear to be in good standing”. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council had earlier issued a show-cause notice to the university for displaying fake certificates on its website, which was later taken completely offline.

Doctors were hired

Dr., assistant professor of obstetrics at GS Medical College in Hapur, PTI reported. Farukh was detained by the Delhi Police on the college campus on Wednesday night. He completed his medical education at Al-Falah University.

Mohammad Arif Mir, a native of Khagund Qazigund in J&K and a first-year student at Laxmipat Singhania Institute of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the state-run Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College in Kanpur, was also detained by the UP counter-terrorism squad, official sources said. He is a former GSVM professor who worked in Al-Falah and was arrested last year on charges of “hoarding explosives”. He is suspected to be in contact with Shaheen Sayeed. UP ATS then searched Mr Mir’s rented accommodation in Ashok Nagar, Nazirabad and seized his mobile phone and laptop for forensic examination before taking him to Delhi for questioning.

Delhi police visited the Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir opposite the Red Fort to collect blast evidence scattered on the temple premises. “The FSL team collected all the evidence from the temple and sent it for further investigation,” a senior Delhi Police officer said, adding that the team also visited the Lala Lajpat Rai market near the blast point, where a dismembered body part was found.

Faridabad police detained a person who parked a red Ford EcoSport car with registration plate DL 10 CK 0458 belonging to Nabi in Haryana’s Khandawali village the day before and handed him over to the J&K police. Faridabad police said that another white car, which the J&K police had been searching for since the day of the blast, was seized from the Al-Falah University premises.

Following Nabi’s movements

While Delhi police complained about gaps in information shared between police teams in different states, a Delhi police officer said: Hindu That they were not alerted by the J&K or Haryana police about the movement of a “high-profile suspect”. “If we had been alerted that a suspect was missing in Faridabad, we would have alerted all our checkpoints, including the toll booth,” the police officer said, pointing out that Nabi could be tracked through CCTV footage using the same vehicle. Using footage from more than 50 cameras, Delhi police reconstructed Nabi’s final hours, from his departure from Faridabad the night before the blast to his execution.

Meanwhile, J&K police said it was “intensifying action against terrorist networks” in north and south Kashmir. Raids and searches continued in Kashmir against members of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and families of persons whose relatives were in Pakistan or Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).

“Six persons associated with subversive networks were brought to police stations and arrested under law in Baramulla. Twenty-two properties associated with terrorist associates were searched and 20 terrorist associated persons were arrested and 02 were sent to jail under preventive detention; two persons were examined under UAPA (currently out on bail), one was arrested under preventive law,” police said.

Eight UAPA accused who were released on bail have been identified for cancellation of bail and two of them have been presented to the competent court in the district, the spokesperson said. “To ensure compliance with the law, two Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) members were searched and two fugitive UAPA accused were tracked down and legal action was initiated,” police said.

Police in Shopian said they carried out “extensive searches at many locations across the district in connection with members and associates of JeI and J&K nationals operating in Pakistan”.

“The searches are part of an ongoing crackdown aimed at identifying individuals and networks that provide any kind of logistical or financial assistance to terrorism-related activities,” police said.

Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) were carried out at many suspicious locations in Pulwama. “During the exercise carried out jointly with the security forces, many buildings were searched and the identities of many people were confirmed,” the police said.

‘The heaviest punishment’

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the punishment to the culprits of the Delhi car blast will send a message to the world that no terrorist should even dare to think of carrying out such an act in India.

Mr. Shah stated that India’s fight against terrorism in the last 11 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been recognized by the whole world, adding that the Prime Minister has been at the forefront of leading this fight globally. He stated that those who committed this cowardly act and those behind it will be brought to justice and punished with the heaviest punishment. He said that the government of India and the Ministry of Home Affairs are fully committed to ensuring this.
