Bangladesh Protest: Bangladesh’s two leading newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were subjected to violent and coordinated attacks late on Thursday night after news spread about the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Organized groups of attackers destroyed, looted and set fire to newspaper offices in Dhaka; This forced both publications to temporarily suspend their print and digital operations.
Prothom Alo office in Karwan Bazar was surrounded by attackers who caused widespread destruction. Furniture, office equipment, documents and other materials were damaged or looted before parts of the building were set on fire. At the same time, The Daily Star’s office on Kazi Nazrul Islam Boulevard was also attacked, vandalized and later burnt.
The attackers reportedly looted more than 150 computers and laptops from the Prothom Alo office, as well as cash, lockers and personal belongings.
