Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery responded to a report stating that he “wants to leave” the organization he has been with for the past three seasons.
This is news for the veteran known in the Motor City as “Knuckles.”
Montgomery used social media to answer to the ESPN report, using a bit of sarcasm while doing so.
“to curse, [D-Mo] Montgomery posted Sunday after the report came out saying the Lions would want a “decent Day 3 pick” in exchange for him.

The 28-year-old player, who started his career with the Chicago Bears, has been enjoying success with the Lions since his arrival there. When the Lions added explosive Jahmyr Gibbs to the mix, the popular “Sonic and Knuckles” duo was born.
But Gibbs has been on the rise since entering the NFL as the Lions’ first-round pick in 2023. He broke out in 2024 with 1,412 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, which led the NFL in 2024. He then followed that up with 1,223 yards and 13 rushing scores; He had a career-high 616 receiving yards and five more touchdowns in 2025.
Montgomery had 716 rushing yards with eight rushing scores, while catching Jared Goff’s 24 pass attempts for 192 yards.
Montgomery is the shortstop in the Lions’ dynamic offense, but Gibbs is sure to be the best player if the team has to choose.

He is under contract through the 2027 season and the Lions will need to trade him if he wants to continue. But his tweet says otherwise.
The report even gives a potential destination for Montgomery, saying it could make sense if the Seattle Seahawks don’t re-sign Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III, who is an unrestricted free agent. The Seahawks could also franchise Walker if they wanted.
Of course, there’s no guarantee the Lions won’t move on from Montgomery, but it appears the veteran is enjoying his role on one of the best offenses in the NFL.

The Lions currently have more than $12 million over the salary cap, but this is when teams will start making cuts to prepare for free agency and the NFL Draft. Montgomery is expected to hit a cap hit of $8.3 million for the 2026 season.
