DC teen takeover incidents and juvenile arrests spark curfew debate

Washington D.C. is grappling with how to deal with the youth violence hitting the city and whether to extend a curfew imposed to contain the problem.

WUSA reported On Monday, residents in Southwest D.C. were reportedly concerned after multiple fights broke out outside a weekend youth event held Saturday night near the King Greenleaf Recreation Center.

The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation held an event for youth on Saturday “to provide youth with a safe, supervised environment,” WUSA reported.

The incident came after the DC Council postpone the vote On March 31st this will extend the temporary duration of DC youth 23:00 curfewIt will end April 15 through September for those 17 and under.

Residents who live near King Greenleaf Recreation Center told WUSA that the scene around the Saturday event made them feel unsafe.

“It makes me feel like, okay, I should either be at home or I shouldn’t walk anywhere because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Gwendolyn McKoy said.

He also expressed concern about how the young people left the event, saying, “When we took them out at 10 o’clock last night, they didn’t get on the bus… a group of kids ran up towards N Street.”

Carol Muldrow, one of the residents of the area, said: “They were fighting in the street, in the middle of the street. They jumped off the bikes and started fighting.”

In a Saturday post on X, user Doug Hochberg He posted two videos of groups of teenagers running through the streets of Southwest DC just after 10 p.m., one block north of the Waterfront Metro stop.

WUSA reported On March 31, Mayor Muriel Bowser also called on the D.C. Council to extend the enhanced curfew, saying: “The juvenile curfew has been described by some as a Band-Aid approach to preventing criminal and unsafe behavior by youth. While I do not fully agree with this statement, there is no point in pulling a Band-Aid off an active wound.”
