Delhi AQI still above 300 amid ‘very poor’ air quality in national capital

Air pollution in Delhi has not brought significant relief to citizens over the last few weeks; Air quality remained “very poor” on Thursday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) above 300 in many areas. As temperatures dropped slightly in northern India, the national capital was shrouded in a thin layer of smog.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in Anand Vihar and Delhi Cantonment areas was recorded at 302 with a thin layer of toxic smoke.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday expressed concerns about Delhi’s air pollution and rising AQI. “We all saw that the AQI in Delhi crossed 800. There is no one talking about finding a permanent solution to this. Incidents of stubble burning have reduced in Punjab. We need coordination between Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the Central government. The national capital, where the Prime Minister, President, MPs and all important people stay, has become the most polluted city in the world…” he said.
After experiencing “very poor” air quality for nine days, the national capital saw marginal improvement on Tuesday; The average AQI dropped below 300 and fell into the “underweight” category, which is now back to the “very underweight” category.

The national capital witnessed strong winds that brought slight relief on Wednesday, pushing the city’s AQI to 259 in the ‘poor’ category, marking an improvement compared to last week’s pollution spike.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the 24-hour average AQI at 4 pm on Wednesday stood at 259, compared to 282 on Tuesday, 314 on Monday and 308 on Sunday.
According to the pollution control agency, an AQI of 0 to 50 is considered “good”, 51-100 “satisfactory”, 101-200 “moderate”, 201-300 “poor”, 301-400 “very poor” and 401-500 “severe”.
