A Democratic lawmaker who previously drafted articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump disrupted a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing on Wednesday and accused Republicans of using concerns about illegal immigrants with commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to distract from what he called Trump’s broader failures.

D-Mich. “Last weekend, a convicted felon armed with bone spurs illegally attacked Iran and launched a protracted war of regime change,” Representative Shri Thanedar said in his opening statement, arguing that Republicans were diverting attention from congressional war powers. he said.

The hearing, hosted by the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability, focused on whether illegal immigrants were obtaining non-resident CDLs and whether the Department of Homeland Security was appropriately coordinating with transportation authorities and ICE to enforce immigration laws tied to commercial trucking.

Officials from Oklahoma and Florida were invited to testify about illegal immigrants holding non-residential CDL licenses, which they say are causing deadly crashes on the nation’s highways.

Lucie County Sheriff Richard del Toro was one of the witnesses and investigated a high-profile case in which an illegal immigrant from India with a CDL from California allegedly killed a family on Florida’s Turnpike after failing to properly complete an illegal U-turn on the tollway.

As Chairman Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., gavel to the hearing, Thanedar interrupted the parliamentary inquiry and questioned why the Homeland Security panel, rather than Transportation, was holding the case.

“Under Rule X, the Transport and Infrastructure Committee has jurisdiction over transport regulatory agencies and their roads and safety,” Thanedar said. he said.

“Any bill to improve road safety would need to be considered and voted on by this committee.”

The Detroit native added that he wanted to put on the record his objections to holding the hearing, saying it was really about “scapegoating immigrants” to deflect from problems with Trump’s handling of the economy that was “going off track.”

Brecheen appeared puzzled and reiterated that the committee was an appropriate venue and whether the House Transportation Committee could similarly investigate.

“While DOT is the primary federal regulator of CDLs, DHS plays a critical role in issuing work permits and immigration benefits through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services,” Brecheen said.

“ICE has partnered with state highway patrol agencies in several states to conduct joint enforcement operations targeting illegal aliens operating commercial motor vehicles, resulting in significant arrests and unsafe drivers being taken off the road.”

He pointed to a case in his state where an illegal immigrant with a New York driver’s license with a REAL ID and a “No Name Given” was discovered and arrested on Interstate 40.

He observed that the REAL-ID Act was signed by former President George W. Bush after 9/11, and that anyone authorized to transport hazardous materials could effectively use an 80,000-pound “chemical bomb” if they so desired.
