As dietary guidelines target ultra-processed foods, Oz says change was long overdue

New dietary guidelines published this year target ultra-processed foods while promoting protein and reducing saturated fats.

CMS Director Dr. Mehmet Öz told Fox News Digital that these rules should have been implemented much earlier.

“We’ve made America realize something we’ve known for a long time in medicine – [that if] If you eat healthy fats, consume the right amount of carbohydrates, and focus on protein, you’ll be much better off,” Oz said in a recent on-camera interview.

He said he’s seeing pressure from the food industry to promote simple carbohydrates.

“All white foods, white flour, white rice, white sugar; all of these cause obesity,” Öz said.

“Paradoxically, it’s not eating fat that makes you fat. It’s sugar that makes you fat, because your body processes it and stores it for future use,” he added.

Kendall Mackintosh, a board-certified and licensed dietitian nutritionist based in Bethesda, Maryland, told Fox News Digital that refined “white foods” and highly processed grains are “among the most metabolically harmful components of the standard American diet.”

“These foods are stripped of fiber, minerals and natural nutrients and are rapidly absorbed, leading to rapid increases in blood sugar and insulin,” Mackintosh said.

“Over time, repeated insulin surges can lead to increased fat accumulation, persistent cravings, systemic inflammation, and a higher risk of insulin resistance.”

The real problem is not the fat in unprocessed foods, but “chronic overconsumption of processed carbohydrates, which impairs long-term metabolic health,” Mackintosh said.
