Designer perfumes recalled for containing banned chemical which may harm fertility
Two designer perfumes have been recalled because they contain a banned ingredient that poses a “serious chemical risk”.
Lionel Richie’s Hello and United Colors of Benetton’s Hot, both sold by discount chain Savers Health and Beauty, were recalled following a notice from the Office for Product Safety and Standards.
Both products contain butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), a synthetic floral scent also known as lilial that is classified as reproductive toxic. According to the statement, BMHCA may harm the health and reproductive system of the unborn child and cause skin sensitization.
Customers have been asked to return items purchased from the Savers store and receive a full refund here. Only products purchased from Savers Health and Beauty stores whose barcodes are listed are affected by this recall.

The product poses a serious chemical risk because it contains the substance butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), which is prohibited for use in cosmetic products.

A statement from the Office of Product Safety and Standards reads: “The affected products have been recalled by Savers Health and Beauty. Customers must return any of the above products purchased from the Savers store to the place of purchase where a full refund will be issued.”
“Only products purchased from Savers Health and Beauty stores with barcodes listed will be affected by this recall. If you are unsure whether you have one of the above products please contact Savers Health and Beauty at help@savers.co.uk.”
The first warning about these products was made last month, but the products were recalled from customers on Wednesday.
In his statement, Savers stated that he wanted to apologize for the inconvenience caused.
The scent, which mimics the scent of lily of the valley, was used in many cosmetics and household products until March 2022. It has since been banned in the UK and EU.
