Hakeem Jeffries says leadership change at DHS not enough to restart funding
Hello, welcome to the US politics live blog.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries said the leadership change wasn’t enough to reopen the government and begin refunding the Department of Homeland Security.
It came as Republican Senator Thom Tillis said he believed White House adviser Stephen Miller “needs to go” and that his role in the Trump administration was a “big problem”.
“Oh, of course I do,” the senior senator representing North Carolina told host Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union when asked during a conversation about the administration’s crackdown on immigrants whether he thought Miller should go.
“He’s not worried about the content. He’s more worried about the form, but I also think he has a tremendous amount of influence over the operations of the cabinet. And I believe we have qualified cabinet members who sometimes do less than they want because of his direction and his undue influence. He’s a big problem in this administration. He has been from the beginning,” Tillis said.
Tillis confirmed his support for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s selection of Markwayne Mullin to replace him, claiming that he believed Mullin would be free of Miller’s influence, even though Mullin repeated similar lies about the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal agents.
Tillis, who does not seek re-election this year, First The Republican will demand DHS secretary Noem resign or be fired.
But Jeffries said on NBC’s Meet the Press with Kristen Welker that a leadership change alone is not enough.
“What we want is a situation where, instead of using taxpayer money to brutalize, or in some cases kill, American citizens, ICE actually acts like every other law enforcement agency in the country,” Jeffries said.

Trump says when to end war will be ‘mutual’ decision with Netanyahu – report

Donald Trump says the decision on when to end the war with Iran will be a “mutual” decision with Benjamin Netanyahu, Times of Israel reported.
The report also stated that Trump claimed in a brief phone call on Sunday that Iran would have destroyed Israel if he and Netanyahu had not been there. The US president said:
Iran was going to destroy Israel and everything around it… We worked together. We destroyed a country that wanted to destroy Israel.
The report stated that Trump was asked whether he alone would decide when the war with Iran would end, or whether Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu would also have a say. Trump’s response was as follows:
I think it’s mutual… kind of. We were talking. I will make a decision at the right time, but everything will be taken into account.
The report stated that when Trump was asked whether Israel could continue the war against Iran even after the US decided to stop its attacks, he refused to consider that possibility, adding: “I don’t think that would be necessary.”
