The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Thursday that ICE agents reported an “unprecedented increase” in vehicular assaults last year, leading to Wednesday’s incident in which an ICE officer shot and killed a motorist during a protest in Minneapolis.

Data showing numerous examples of attackers using their cars to ram law enforcement officers, sometimes causing injuries, suggests Wednesday’s shooting was just one of many incidents police officers faced last year.

Along with the increase in vehicular assaults, authorities have also seen a more than 1,300% increase in assaults and an 8,000% increase in death threats against ICE agents.

DHS cited Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as calling for ICE to “get the hell out of Minneapolis” following Wednesday’s shooting, saying the increase in attacks was encouraged by “radical rhetoric from sanctimonious politicians.”

“Sanctuary politicians have created an environment that encourages widespread attacks on law enforcement,” DHS said.

Since January 21, 2025, ICE officers have been subjected to 66 car assaults compared to just two during the same period the previous year, resulting in a 3,200% increase.

Between January 20 and December 31, 2025, the first year of the Trump administration, DHS officials reported that the number of attacks increased to 275, compared to 19 during the same period in 2024.

“This is an alarming 1,347% increase in attacks against ICE officers,” DHS said.

Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin blamed sanctuary leaders for the violence and suggested their rhetoric “demonized our law enforcement” targeting illegal immigrants in the United States.

“This unprecedented increase in violence against law enforcement is a direct result of asylum politicians and the media creating an environment that demonizes our law enforcement and encourages widespread attacks against them. Dangerous criminals—whether illegal aliens or U.S. citizens—are attacking law enforcement and weaponizing their vehicles to attack law enforcement,” McLaughlin said in a statement. he said.

“Yet, the brave men and women of DHS will not be deterred and will continue to apprehend the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens. Anyone who attacks law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
