JeM’s Masood Azhar announces formation of first women’s wing

Pakistan-based terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has made a major change in its strategy and announced that it has established its first women’s wing called “Jamaat-ul-Muminat”, sources told IANS. The decision was made public through a letter published under the name of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, who is designated as a terrorist by the UN. According to the letter, the recruitment campaign for this newly created unit began on October 8 at Markaz Usman-o-Ali in Bahawalpur, Pakistan.

Notably, during Operation Sindoor, Indian Security Forces targeted the JeM headquarters at Bahawalpur in Pakistan’s southern Punjab. Last month, JeM commander Ilyas Kashmiri had said in a video that Azhar’s family members were killed during Operation Sindoor in the attack in Bahawalpur.

According to sources, this Women’s Brigade of JeM will be led by Sadiya Azhar, sister of Masood Azhar, whose husband Yusuf Azhar was killed in Operation Sindoor when Indian forces struck JeM’s headquarters in Markaz Subhanallah on May 7. Sources reveal that the terrorist organization has now started recruiting economically weak women and wives of its commanders who are being trained in its centers in Bahawalpur, Karachi, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Haripur and Mansehra.

The Deobandi-based organisation, which has traditionally banned women from participating in armed jihad or combat missions, appears to have revised its stance after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Intel sources suggest that Masood Azhar and his brother Talha al-Saif jointly approved the decision to include women in JeM’s operational framework, which led to the establishment of this special women’s brigade.

While terrorist groups such as ISIS, Boko Haram, Hamas and LTTE have a history of recruiting women as suicide attackers, organizations such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen have largely avoided this, but sources now believe JeM’s latest move signals its intention to train and use female suicide bombers in future terror operations.

Following Operation Sindoor, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) strategically moved to Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province. It is noteworthy that currently Pakistan is desperately leaving no stone unturned and asking for donations from ordinary people to rebuild the terrorist infrastructures destroyed during Operation Sindoor.

As reported by IANS in August, JeM has also launched an online fundraising campaign through EasyPaisa to raise Rs 3.91 billion to build 313 new marjorams across Pakistan.
