Dick Cheney remembered as steady, influential force in US politics | Dick Cheney

As US political leaders offered their condolences on the death of Dick Cheney, George W Bush described the former vice president as “a calm and steady presence in the White House in the midst of great national challenges”.

Bush wrote: expression He said he would remember Cheney “as the honorable man that he was” and that history would remember him “among the finest public servants of his generation – a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence and seriousness of purpose to every position he held.”

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso offered praise. “Wyoming mourns the passing of Vice President Dick Cheney,” he wrote to X.

“His fearless leadership shaped many of the most pivotal moments in domestic and U.S. foreign policy for decades. Dick will be remembered as a pivotal figure who helped direct the course of history in Wyoming, the United States, and around the world.”

Lawmakers from other states also weighed in on the 46th vice president.

Jon Husted, a Republican senator from Ohio, wrote of X: “He devoted much of his life to serving the United States, from Congress to the Pentagon to the White House.” “He had an unwavering commitment to our nation’s security, strength and founding values.”

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst wrote: “Whether as Vice President, Secretary of Defense, or in Congress, Dick Cheney was always a proud American. His determination to defeat terrorism ensured that 9/11 would never happen again. He served his country with honor and duty. May he rest in peace.”

Ohio governor Mike DeWine wrote: “I first met him when we were members of Congress together and under the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives. He was thoughtful, steady, and an advocate for his beloved Wyoming. Our nation saw his leadership as the U.S. Secretary of Defense, directing our military strategy during Operation Desert Storm. Vice President Cheney faithfully served his country in every office he held. We will miss him.”

Bill Schuette, Michigan’s former attorney general and congressman, recalled their service together in Washington. “He was a good man, a peerless Statesman, and a proud American,” Schuette wrote.

Robert Doar, president of the center-right think tank American Enterprise Institute, noted the passing of former graduates. “He was a powerful figure in the conservative movement and had a profound impact on our country,” Doar wrote.

No statement has been made from the White House yet. Donald Trump was active on Truth Social this morning but did not post about Cheney’s death.
