‘Extraordinary’: prison guards slammed over teen death

A Coroner found that a young man who died in prison after being emptied for 17 hours should not be exposed to “unnecessary distress and deprivation”.

The 19 -year -old child, who can only be defined as Joel for legal reasons, died in July 2022 at the Goulburn Correction Center in the southern paintings of the NSW.

Joel was accused of robbery in May 2022 with a dangerous weapon.

After the accusation, he wanted to talk to a psychologist to help him cope with the concern of being in prison for the first time.

Until July 2022, a prison officer gave a note that he wanted to move from his partner cell.

Note was afraid that his cellmate would be aware that he would influence the common criminals allegedly in his statements to the police.

According to the officer, “In short, I’m afraid of my secret security.” He said.

“I don’t want anyone to know that I am a dog. Can you raise me without knowing Celly?”

The prison officers carried him to a single cell while processing the application to be placed under protection.

However, civil servants “hours” and did not work, Coroner was found.

The next morning, Joel was found dead for suicide in his cell.

His body was discovered after being checked and evacuated for 17 hours.

The last check-in by an officer took place at 14:00 when dinner was given.

Prison Governor Leah Nicholson, personnel shortage and lack of financing, cell observations can only be done in the most risk areas, he said.

However, Coroner Joan Baptie said civil servants did not do Joel’s concerns.

Coroner, “Prisoners’ dinner with dinner around 14.00 dinner is quite extraordinary.

“Prisons are deprived of their freedom, but should not be subjected to unnecessary problems and deprivation, including the time of food provision.”
