Distressing footage shows aftermath of Derby car-ramming as two victims leave hospital and police continue to question suspect

While the police continued to question the driver, sad images emerged showing what happened after the car accident in which seven people were injured.

In the footage taken after a car drove onto the pavement and mowed down revelers in Derby on Saturday night, two people can be seen lying on the street.

In a statement on Monday morning, Derbyshire Police said it had been given more time to question the 36-year-old Indian driver, who was arrested a mile from the scene seven minutes after the crash.

Counterterrorism officers are assisting with the investigation.

Police said they are keeping an open mind as to the cause of the incident.

Seven people were treated at the scene and taken to hospital with a range of serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a black Suzuki Swift crashed into Friar Gate at around 9.30pm on Saturday.

Two people were later discharged from the hospital.

Dharma Mundell, 26, who works in a newsagents meters away from where the incident occurred, said people were smoking on the pavement outside the Bishop Blaise pub before the driver ‘accelerated’ and hit them.

He said he was serving a customer when he heard a loud explosion followed by people screaming and crying.

‘I think I was in total shock because I heard banging and screaming and then when I came out (of the shop) there were ambulances and police everywhere. “It was a big shock,” he said.

‘An ambulance stopped right in front of my shop and a lady was put on a stretcher.

‘(He was) in a full neck brace and I saw some blood dripping down his head.

‘It was a bit scary. It wasn’t something you expected here at all.

‘This guy literally sped down the road, got on the pavement, passed through people.

‘He really walked through people. I saw a group of people on the road and he passed through them.

‘When I heard the screaming I thought one person was fighting and then you see seven or eight people on the ground.’

Bishop Blaise’s assistant manager Calum Green was working when the incident occurred outside the bar. He said ambulance sirens alerted him to the accident.

He said the car pulled up to the sidewalk where a group of people were standing.

‘He stepped onto the pavement once. “We closed the doors and kept everyone inside because we didn’t know what was going on,” he said.

Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield described the crash as ‘horrific’.

He said after the incident Friar Gate would be closed to cars this Easter bank holiday weekend.

‘We want people to feel confident that they can continue to go out,’ he said.

East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward said it was a “serious situation”. but it is an isolated incident’.

“I know this is going to be a really scary time, not only for those who were injured on the evening, but also for those who were downtown and experienced firsthand what happened,” he said.

‘The city itself and all our institutions will want to do what they can to support people at this difficult time.

‘We know that the repercussions of violent acts like this don’t just end at that moment.

‘There will also be real sadness and trauma for the victims who witnessed and were directly affected by the events of the night, but we understand there have been no deaths and two people have already been discharged from hospital and we hope there will be more soon.’
