A horrific civil war in Sudan, with reports of mass murder by rebel forces, has arrived on the doorstep of an Indian family after the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) allegedly kidnapped a man from Odisha.

The kidnapped Indian national, Adarsh Behera, 36, from Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur, had been working in a plastic factory in Sudan since 2022. An emergency video of Behera being surrounded by armed RSF fighters went viral on the internet, with one of the militants asking the captive Indian “Do you know Shah Rukh Khan?” There was a strange conversation in which he asked:

Reports claimed that Behera was kidnapped from the city of Al Fashir, approximately 1000 kilometers away from the capital Khartoum, and taken to Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, a known stronghold of RSF.

In the video clip shared by his family, we see Behera clasping his hands on the ground and asking for help:

“I am in Al-Fashir where the situation is dire. I have been staying here for two years with many difficulties. My family members and children are very worried. I am appealing to the Odisha government for help.”

The clip allegedly shows heavily armed RSF fighters around Behera; here a warrior asks an unusual question about the Bollywood superstar. Another fighter then orders Behera to say: “Dagalo is fine” – an apparent reference to RSF Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

RSF and Sudan’s Civil Conflict

RSF is a powerful paramilitary group led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti, and was allied with the Sudanese government until the outbreak of civil war in April 2023. The RSF is fighting a very brutal war with the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The war was sparked by a power struggle between SAF General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF Commander Hemedti after the two disagreed over integrating the RSF into the army following the 2021 coup. The conflict has since spread to major cities; RSF forces captured Darfur and Khartoum, displacing tens of thousands of people. RSF fighters were recently accused of killing 200 people in a single incident.

Desperate call of the family

Behera’s wife, Sasmita, resides in Jagatsinghpur with her two sons, aged eight and three, and has made a desperate appeal to the Odisha government and the Ministry of External Affairs for intervention to ensure the safe return of her husband.

Sasmita said her husband could not be reached around October 20. Finally, on October 24, he received a call from an unknown number. “My husband was on the other side and was crying.

He told me that he was kidnapped by terrorists while he was returning from work with his boss. He said that they brutally attacked him and that they would release him only if the embassy or the Red Cross talked to them.” More than 13 million people were displaced due to the civil conflict that started last year. The violence hit the capital Khartoum the hardest. The Indian Embassy in Sudan has not yet made a statement regarding Behera’s abduction.
