‘Make America Go Away’: spoof Maga caps soar in popularity amid Greenland crisis | Denmark

Red baseball caps imitating Donald Trump’s Maga hats have become a symbol of Danish and Greenlanders’ resistance to the US president’s threat to take over the frozen region.

The covers, which say “Make America Away” and parody Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, have gained popularity, along with several variants, on social media and at public protests, including a weekend demonstration in freezing weather in Copenhagen.

European governments are standing behind Denmark and Greenland, arguing that the Arctic regions must be defended and warning that Trump’s threats to Greenland are undermining the security of the West.

The hats were created by Copenhagen vintage clothing store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen. The first batches failed in 2024; until the Trump administration recently stepped up its rhetoric on Greenland. Now they appear everywhere.

“When a delegation from America went to Greenland, we started to realize this was probably not a joke; this isn’t reality TV, it’s actually real,” Tonnesen said. “And I said, ‘Okay, what can I do?’ I said. “Can I communicate in a funny way with a beautiful message and unite Danes to show that Danes support the people of Greenland?”

Demand suddenly increased from a trickle to sales within a weekend. Tonnesen said he’s currently ordering “several thousand.”

The original version, designed by Tonnesen, included a pun: “Nu det NUUK!” – A version of the Danish phrase “Nu det nok”, meaning “Enough is enough”, in place of Nuuk, the small capital of Greenland.

Some hats were worn at Saturday’s rally, where protesters waved red-and-white Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried handmade signs mocking U.S. claims to the region. “No Means No,” one sign read. “Make America Smart Again,” declared another.

“I want to show my support for Greenland and also show that I don’t like the US president,” said Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, wearing one of the red hats.

Protester Kristian Boye, wearing another hat, said the meeting in front of Copenhagen city hall struck a cheerful tone while delivering a serious message.

“I’m here to support Greenlanders who are going through a very difficult time right now,” he said. “They are threatened with an invasion of their country. I think this is completely unacceptable.”
