Chipmaker Nvidia developing robotaxis, eyes testing by 2027, CEO Jensen Huang envisions billion cars on the road
According to Bloomberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the chipmaker’s plans to develop technology for autonomous vehicles and robots on January 5.
The chipmaker is reportedly planning to test as early as 2027, according to a CNBC report.
Speaking at the CES trade show in Las Vegas, Jensen Huang added that he introduced a vehicle platform called Alpamayo that allows cars to “reason” in the real world, according to the BB report. He added that potential users can take the free Alpamayo model offer and retrain themselves.
The executive added that robotics (including autonomous vehicles) is the company’s second most important growth category after artificial intelligence (AI), according to CNBC.
“We dream that one day, one billion cars on the road will be fully autonomous. You can either manage that and have a robotaxi rented from someone, or you can own it,” he said.
How does Nvidia’s Alpamayo model work?
According to a Bloomberg report, the company aims to create vehicles that can think their way out of unexpected situations, such as the traffic light outage that affected Waymo vehicles during the Los Angeles power outage last month.
He added that a computer in the vehicles will analyze the inputs using cameras and other sensors and produce solutions by dividing them into steps.
What about Nvidia’s robotics?
The Bloomberg report said Nvidia plans to launch AI models and other technologies for robots. To that end, Huang told the audience at the CES trade show that the company is working with Siemens AG to bring artificial intelligence to more parts of the physical world.
