Dowman Makes History as Arsenal Strike Late, Man City Held by West Ham

LONDON: 16-year-old Max Dowman moved Arsenal closer to the title by becoming the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer in Manchester City’s dramatic 2-0 win against Everton on Saturday, following their 1-1 draw with West Ham.
Mikel Arteta’s men are heading towards a first league title in 22 years; Because their advantage over City, who have a game in hand, currently stands at nine points.
Arsenal struggled to break down a stubborn Everton until the youngster turned the game around in the final moments.
Viktor Gyokeres finally found a way out with the help of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who headed in Dowman’s cross in the 89th minute.
The scenes of delirium on the field and in the stands underlined the importance of the fourth league win in a row.
There was still time for Dowman to run the length of the pitch and slot into an empty net, and after heading into Everton’s corner in injury time, Pickford was nowhere to be seen.
At just 16 and 73 days old, Dowman is now the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Premier League and Arsenal.
“Every time he got the ball he changed the game. He made things happen and we looked more like a threat,” Arteta added.
“It’s not normal to do that at that age, in that context, with the pressure and the expectation of winning the game.”
Arsenal, which has been trophyless since 2020, continues its quest for a quadruple cup.
The leaders tried their luck to beat depleted Everton; This added to the sense that if they took the crown, they would be one of the least stylistically impressive champions in recent memory.
But Arteta and company won’t care about that ahead of a big week ahead.
Arsenal will play their Champions League last 16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen next week and travel to Wembley to face City in the league cup final.
City’s season is in danger of being derailed as West Ham cling to a spot that takes them out of the relegation zone for the first time in three months.
Pep Guardiola’s men lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 in midweek, dropping four points to teams struggling with relegation in the Premier League.
Bernardo Silva’s cross to the crossbar gave City the lead at the London Stadium.
But that advantage lasted less than four minutes until Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home from a corner.
City dominated the second half but could not find a way out as Erling Haaland’s barren spell in front of goal continued.
Guardiola said before the match that there was no room for error in his side’s title race and that their chances may have been destroyed when Marc Guehi had a superb opportunity to win the game in stoppage time.
City midfielder Rodri said: “Maybe yes, maybe no” on whether the title race is over. “We will not give up, we will continue to fight.”
A point for West Ham would also have major consequences at the bottom of the table.
Nottingham Forest are in the bottom three, ahead of Tottenham Hammers only on goal difference.
– Chelsea shook –
Chelsea, in fifth place, left a difficult week behind with Anthony Gordon’s goal at Stamford Bridge.
Having defeated Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 in the first match of the last 16, Liam Rosenior’s team committed match-fixing in the 18th minute when Gordon took advantage of Joe Willock’s pass.
As long as Liverpool avoid defeat against Tottenham on Sunday, Chelsea will drop to sixth and move into the top five and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
A rare win at Stamford Bridge moved Newcastle into ninth place and within six points of the top five.
Brighton advanced to the first half by beating Sunderland 1-0 with a goal from Yankuba Minteh, while Burnley edged Bournemouth 0-0.
