DPA Kandla continues to set pace for grounding of decarbonisation projects

Kandla (Gujarat) [India]November 16 (ANI): Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla is accelerating its position as a clean energy and sustainable logistics hub by attracting increasing attention from international partners.
On November 13, a high-level British delegation supported by GH2 India and led by British Deputy High Commissioner Stephen Thomas Hickling reviewed the progress of India’s first indigenous 1 MW green hydrogen plant at the port, according to information provided by the port authority.
The team praised Kandla’s rapid advances in clean energy infrastructure, green port initiatives and its emerging role in India’s green hydrogen value chain.
Kandla has consistently become a key enabler in enabling India to achieve national and global green fuel targets, and ongoing projects position the port as a strategic node for investments focused on decarbonisation, officials said.
Separately, DPA Kandla hosted a delegation from the New Zealand High Commission, accompanied by industry leaders from the country’s forestry and wood processing sector. Visitors observed Kandla’s critical role as India’s leading EXIM gateway for timber; It has supported much of the country’s timber supply chain and provided insight into the potential for growing bilateral trade.
The back-to-back meetings underscore Kandla’s rising global profile as it deepens its efforts towards sustainable operations and strengthens its contribution to India’s energy transition.
Earlier this month, on November 6, a delegation of European experts on certification and European Union regulations, supported by the Green Hydrogen Alliance of India (GH2), visited the Green Hydrogen Plant in Kandla and was briefed on the Port’s plans to scale up green hydrogen.
The delegation was also informed about the projects, including bio-methanol and eMethanol projects.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of India Maritime Week 2025 held in Mumbai last month, Deendayal Port Authority Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh said the port has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate decarbonisation efforts.
Singh said the MoUs are “mainly aimed at setting up facilities for production of green methanol, green hydrogen and green ammonia in Kandla”.
“With this decarbonization drive, there is an opportunity for us to set up shipbuilding facilities in Kandla. We have also signed MoUs with technology partners and shipbuilders who can help us structure a project for shipbuilding and ship repair for Kandla so that we can create a system that can cater to shipbuilding of larger sized commercial ships that can be deployed on trade routes in India,” he added.
India has pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070 and has highlighted strategic initiatives to decarbonise the maritime sector in line with India Maritime Vision 2030. (MOMENT)
