Drive-by second fatal attack in weeks for inner suburb

A murder charge has been filed following a stabbing in an inner-city suburb that was also shaken by a separate drive-by shooting that left another man dead.
Police were called to a block of flats in Fitzroy, in Melbourne’s north, at about 9.45pm on December 22, where they found a man with stab wounds.
The 43-year-old man died shortly after being taken to hospital.
On Friday, several search warrants were executed at properties in the street where the block of flats is located, before a 23-year-old man was arrested and questioned.
He has since been charged with murder and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
Police claimed that these people knew each other.
The incident occurred in the same suburb where a young man was killed in a drive-by shooting overnight Saturday and others fled.
Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows told reporters that an officer was working at a nearby police station when he heard two gunshots and rushed to the scene.
He found the victim, identified as a young man, who suffered gunshot wounds and later died.
Det Acting Insp Meadows added: “It certainly appears to have been targeted when shots were fired from a moving vehicle.”
Police are appealing for information to help identify the two men captured on CCTV footage, as well as another man seen with the victim at the time of the attack.
The crime scene was established and cleared Saturday afternoon.
