DSA encourages Minnesota workers to use sick time for ICE protests

The Twin Cities chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is encouraging Minnesota workers to use “sick and safe times” to protest ICE on Friday.

“Even without fascist ICE agents terrorizing our streets, it can be hard to leave work.” a post this week he’s reading Democratic Socialists of America from the Twin Cities.

“But no matter your employment situation, we are here to help you organize your workplace and join the strike on January 23, whether that means giving direction to non-union management or educating your friendly but uninformed boss on why he needs to close for the day.”

Protests are planned in Minnesota on Friday against ICE, which has come under increasing criticism since the murder. Renee Nicole Good Jan. 7 in Minneapolis.

“Twin Cities DSA is marching and rallying with unions and other community members on January 23 because this military occupation is a war against the working class,” the post states. “Workers have leverage. When we cut our labor, the economy grinds to a halt. No jobs, no schools, no shopping. Just community, conscience, and collective resistance to ICE and injustice. Let’s melt ICE from MN.”

The slides in the post also reference Minnesota Gained Patient and Safe Time (ESST) In the law they write: “You are only out for ONE DAY, you do NOT have to provide your employer with documentation showing the reason for your absence.”

“If you don’t want to explain why you’re not working, take a mental health day with ESST,” one of the slides in the post reads.

The post also encourages employees to ask their employers to close the business for the day, if management is receptive.

“If your employer is friendly, talk to him/her about closing for the day,” it says. “Trump and ICE are hurting business; if society’s suffering isn’t enough, share the economic impact.”

a separate Instagram post “White people must put their bodies in the way and do everything they can to ensure that Black people are not subjected to police brutality in the first place,” says a group called Ice Out of Twin Ports, which will join the anti-ICE march on Thursday and hold a sit-in on Friday.

One technique highlighted in the Twin Harbors Off the Ice post encourages protesters to attack police officers, writing: “Push or pull the officer off the detainee. Hit the officer’s hand to break his grip.”

Another technique suggested to protesters was, “Open the police car/paddy wagon doors and let the people out. Learn how to break zipper handcuffs with a bobby pin and free detainees.”
