Durgapur Gang Rape Survivor’s Father Seeks CBI Probe

Bhubaneswar: The father of a second-year medical student from Odisha, who was allegedly gang-raped near a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur, said his daughter will not continue her education in the state. He also called for the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation.

“My daughter’s condition is stable now. Doctors did not speak to me directly but her condition is improving. She will not continue her education in West Bengal. Odisha Women’s Commission has promised to help her transfer to a good college. They met my daughter and offered full support,” he said.

Appreciating the police action so far, the father maintained that only a CBI investigation can ensure a fair and thorough investigation. “The investigation is going well, but it would be even better if CBI takes over. Strict action should be taken against everyone involved. We are still waiting for the medical report,” he added.

So far, five people have been arrested in connection with the crime, including a former university security guard, a hospital employee, a civilian employee and an unemployed youth.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi personally spoke to the survivor and his family on Monday evening and assured them of the Odisha government’s full support. During the detailed phone conversation, he expressed his concern for his health and stated that his training, security and medical care would be fully provided.

“I have instructed the authorities to take all necessary measures to help you continue your education. If necessary, arrangements will be made for your registration in Bhubaneswar,” Mr. Majhi was quoted as saying to the survivor.

Shovana Mohanty, chairperson of Odisha State Women’s Commission, who is currently in Durgapur, is coordinating with local authorities and providing assistance to the victim and her family.
