Verizon layoffs: American telecommunications company to cut 15,000 jobs amid restructuring — Who will get affected?

Layoffs at Verizon: According to Reuters, the leading American telecommunications company Verizon is preparing to reduce thousands of positions within the scope of restructuring under its new CEO Dan Schulman.

Citing a source familiar with the matter, the report said the company plans to lay off about 15,000 people, accounting for 15% of its workforce.

However, a Verizon spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.

The new CEO’s first commitment is to stem the bleeding from subscriber churn, which will require subsidizing expensive phones to prevent large numbers of Verizon subscribers from leaving, Craig Moffett, senior analyst at Moffett Nathanson, told Reuters.

When will layoffs begin?

Layoffs are planned to take place starting next week.

Who will be affected?

The layoffs target Verizon’s non-union management staff and are expected to affect more than 20% of its workforce, a source told Reuters.

He added that Verizon also plans to transition about 180 company-owned retail stores to franchise operations.

slowdown in growth

Verizon is struggling with increased competition as subscriber growth slows and wary consumers are unwilling to buy premium wireless plans. The company also faces increasing pressure from rivals AT&T and T-Mobile US.

How many employees does Verizon have?

At the end of 2024, Verizon had around 1,00,000 US employees.

Last year it announced 4,800 job cuts through a voluntary program, charging nearly $2 billion.

Verizon acquisitions

— Verizon spent $52 billion to buy key wireless C-Band spectrum in a 2021 auction.

— The telecommunications company struck a $20 billion deal to buy Frontier Communications last year.

— Verizon also spent $6 billion to acquire prepaid cellphone provider TracFone Wireless.

Cutting-edge layoffs

Amazon, TCS, Microsoft, IBM and many other companies have announced layoffs.

Earlier this month, tech giant IBM said it would cut thousands of roles as it focuses on software growth.

“We are taking an action that will impact a low-single-digit percentage of our global workforce in the fourth quarter,” a company spokesperson said.

More than 110,502 tech workers were laid off at 226 tech companies in 2025 alone, according to Layoffs.fyi, a platform that tracks layoffs in the global tech industry.

Amazon announced it will reduce its global corporate workforce by approximately 14,000 people.

The total workforce of India’s largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services has fallen to 593,314 after the number decreased by 19,755 as of the second quarter of fiscal 2025-26.
